Tomb Raider costumes are the epitome of girl power costumery. When we say Tomb Raider, we automatically think of Lara Croft, the sexy, sassy, and smart video game character. Of course, a lot of us will also remember the character as played by Angelina Jolie in the 2001 film Lara Croft: Tomb Raider. Some critics objected to the character, saying she was a caricature, an unrealistic icon of sex appeal meant to draw in the largely-male crowds. Whether or not she was created with the intention of objectifying women is a moot point. The matter of fact is that she is smart, beautiful, and most of all, able to stand for herself.
Tomb Raider costumes can vary, but there are always common elements. If you want something that is iconic, then you would do well to read on.
Lara croft is a gun-slinging lady who has strong interests in ancient cultures and is also not shy of her beauty. That pretty much distils the essence of the character and the costume. You want something that is easy to move in, shows off skin and curves, yet says strong
woman, and not woman of loose virtue. Essentially, you want something that you could imagine yourself wearing when exploring ancient structures, but armed with the hardware to protect yourself should you need to.

Tomb Raider costumes are by and large form-fitting and show off a lot of skin. In the game series, Lara Croft sports several variations of her basic costume, and also some special outfits for environments where she would not want to leave so much skin exposed (like snowbound areas and the like). Her getups also vary depending on which film or game you are basing it on, but if you choose your costume items right, you won’t have to worry about not being instantly recognizable.
Iconic Tomb Raider costumes based on the one in the movie are primarily black in color. You will want a black tank top. The shorts are black boy-leg type shorts, with a wide belt and a skull-detail buckle. Get two leg holsters and one prop semi-automatic pistol for each. For the movie-poster look, choose chrome-plated prop guns rather than black or blue-steel. Also, if you can nab a chunky bracelet like the one in the movie poster, then all the better. Her hair is either braided or held in a ponytail. Black military-style boots or hiking boots will do for footwear. Extras can include a tactical belt, sunglasses, open-finger gloves, and a wig if you need it.
An alternate, yet still canonical look leans towards khaki and brown instead of black. Get a khaki t-shirt and brown shorts, and the rest stays the same. Of course, if you want to keep it true to character, you want each piece to be tight and showing off your curves. No shyness here!
Part of the Lara Croft’s appeal is her personality, which is what sets her apart from many other video game females. She is the brave hero, the one who can save the world and look good while doing it. She is a real lady, having been well-educated and having grown up in a rich environment, and she is never rough or uncouth even in the heat of battle. That means that the wearer of the costume should exude girl power without rubbing it in anyone’s face. She has to be cool but not aloof, assertive yet feminine, and all-around sexy.
For those who want to push the costume a little further, here is a tip: you could add just a little bit of fake dirt and grime to get that look that says “I just got back from a rocking adventure, but I still look oh-so-good”. A little war paint is also good. Some tearing and small rips can increase the sex appeal of the costume, if you want it that way.
Tomb Raider outfits are only costumes. In the end, it takes real guts to pull it off right and come across as a real, strong woman. Show them what you’re made of! Learn more about Lara Croft costumes on out homepage.
